The Groundwater Foundation announces that Carbon County has recently entered the Groundwater Guardian program. Groundwater Guardian, a program of The Groundwater Foundation, supports, recognizes, and connects communities taking voluntary, pro-active steps toward groundwater protection.
Each year communities enter the program and work toward goals established by a team of community representatives. There is no cost to enter the program, rather the team adopts and works to implement an activity that protects groundwater, such as public awareness, education, conservation, pollution prevention, public policy, or best management practices.]The program began in 1994 with eight communities and has grown steadily each year. A rolling entry date is available for communities entering the program for the first time. According to Groundwater Guardian director, Rachael Herpel, “A rolling entry date allows communities to get involved with Groundwater Guardian at any time during the year. Communities can use Groundwater Guardian to take advantage of local interest and get local leadership involved.” A more complete description of Groundwater Guardian and on-line entry forms are available on The Groundwater Foundation’s Web site at www.groundwater.org.]Groundwater Guardian also offers an affiliate program to recognize businesses, organizations, and agencies that work with communities and support their groundwater protection efforts. Support may include providing educational materials, assistance for public information events, technical assistance, or in-kind services. Affiliates also spread the word about Groundwater Guardian and encourage communities to enter the program.
